Harbor Seals

Harbor Seals, Jenner, California

Found at the mouth of the Russian River, these Harbor Seals are a common sight on the coast, ranging from Arctic waters down through California on the west coast, and the Carolinas on the east. They have dark spots on their backs, and are lighter- colored below. Males and females are about the same size, up to about five feet in length [1.5 m], and about 250 pounds [115 kg] in weight. They are often seen sunning and sleeping in large herds on the beach. They can also be found following the fish runs upriver. Afternoon sun provides beautiful sidelighting on this pair.
