This familiar monolith stands at the mouth
of the Russian River, in Jenner,
California. The fiery salmon-colored sunset
adds a surreal effect to the scene. Use of a long telephoto lens
compresses the scene into strong graphic elements, dominated
by the large silhouette of the rock, and offset by the huge distorted
form of the setting sun. A flock of cormorants look on from atop
the rock. The now silent antenna on the upper corner of the rock
used to serve as a navigational aid for ships. |
